Mailto Shortcut & Change Homepage
Every now and then a trick will come back to my mind and I probably have these two
posted somewhere on the site but thought I would share them again with you.
The mailto shortcut will open your email default program in the compose mode.
Right click on desktop and select shortcut and in the empty space in the window
that opens type mailto: or if you send a lot of mail to one person you can type for example:( mailto:gary@freepims.com )and it will open and you will be ready to begin composing your message. Your email
default icon should be there on your desktop now.
Change Homepage: I am not sure if
this works in IE 7 but think it works in all other browsers. If you want to change your home page just drag the favicon in
the address bar to the home icon in the menu bar. A small window will pop up and ask if you want to make that your new home
page. You know the rest of the story, OK. I hope someone finds these useful.
techruler.com I found this site in some of my old notes and had forgotten how good it was. For
the novice you can watch tutorials on PC maintence and more. They offer all kinds of tips, software, etc. Here's there's about
us:
About us.....
techruler.com was started by several graduate students from Bloomsburg University's
Instructional Technology Program who had an idea. This idea gave people a place to share their computer and troubleshooting
tips.
techruler.com has grown to include software reviews, downloads, and windows tips.
Many people have contributed to this free site and we are still looking for more. Since graduation the webmasters have jobs,
so the site takes longer to update and send responses, but we are still updating it daily. We are also looking for new ideas
and contributors. Please let us know if you would like to help us out.
This is one heck of site if you keep digging you keep finding.
Leaving your computer in a hurry but you don’t want to log off? You can double-click
a shortcut on your desktop to quickly lock the keyboard and display without using CTRL+ALT+DEL or a screensaver.
To create a shortcut on your desktop to lock your computer: Right-click the desktop. Point
to New, and then click Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard opens. In the text box, type the following: rundll32.exe
user32.dll,LockWorkStation
Click Next. Enter a name for the shortcut. You can call it "Lock Workstation"
or choose any name you like. Click Finish.
You can also change the shortcut's icon (my personal favorite is the padlock icon
in shell32.dll). To change the icon: Right click the shortcut and then select Properties. Click the Shortcut tab,
and then click the Change Icon button. In the Look for icons in this file text box, type: Shell32.dll. Click OK. Select
one of the icons from the list and then click OK
You could also give it a shortcut keystroke such CTRL+ALT+L. This would save you
only one keystroke from the normal command, but it could be more convenient.
